Q2 2024 Recognition: Helene Richter (Münster)
Prof. Dr. Helene Richter was honored for her publication, “Challenging current scientific practice: how a shift in research methodology could reduce animal use.” Her work supports a paradigm shift in experimental design to significantly reduce the number of animals used in laboratory research.

Q3 2024 Recognition: Selene Lickfett (Düsseldorf)
Ms. Selene Lickfett and her colleagues were recognized for their publication, “Mutant huntingtin impairs neurodevelopment in human brain organoids through CHCHD2-mediated neurometabolic failure.” Their groundbreaking study uses human brain organoids to model Huntington’s disease, presenting an innovative, non-animal method capable of replicating human developmental and disease processes.

Advancing the 3R Principles
Both recognized studies demonstrate the continuous evolution of scientific methods toward reducing and ultimately replacing animal experiments. The Paper of the Quarter program of the 3R Competence Network NRW serves as a platform to highlight, celebrate, and drive further innovations in ethical research practices.
