The European Citizens' Initiative "Save cruelty-free cosmetics - Commit to a Europe without animal testing" launched a petition campaign in June 2021. Among other points, this petition calls for „Modernise science in the EU. Commit to a legislative proposal plotting a roadmap to phase-out all animal testing in the EU before the end of the current legislative term.” After the quorum of 1.4 million signatures was reached, the corresponding hearing took place in the EU Commission in May 2023, attended by several EU politicians, some researchers and the initiators of the campaign. At the moment, scientists all over Europe are discussing what consequences a phase-out of animal testing would have for biomedical research in Europe. In this online webinar, Prof. Dr. Frank Bengel and Prof. Dr. André Bleich from Hannover Medical School, together with Kirk Leech, EARA, analyze the hearing and discuss possible future steps for the research community.
